What is the Asian Handicap and how does it work in football?

When you hear Asian handicap betting, what comes to your mind? Does it sound familiar to you? Or, this is the first time that you encounter the word? Whatever it is, Asian Handicap in betting is one of the most interesting bets that ever exist in sportsbook betting in Singapore. Although it may sound a bit exotic and mysterious, this is the easiest type of bet.

Like the name itself, it originates and is most popular in the Asian sports betting market. And you will notice in most Asian betting sites, Asian handicaps will never go off the list.

What is Handicap Betting?

Handicap betting, point betting, line betting, whatever you call it. This type of bet is often used to even out the playing field for two teams that are not evenly matched.

Here, the bookies give a virtual advantage to the weak team. As well as, a virtual advantage to the stronger team. So, when you bet on the weaker team, then they would have the edge over the other team. Bookmakers do this to even out the chance of winning. And if there is no handicap made by the bookies, then there is no doubt that the stronger team will win the game. And the game would be very predictable and monotonous. Handicap betting helps to even things up as well as make the game more interesting.

What is an Asian Handicap?

Asian handicap (AH) betting is a type of handicap betting where it is commonly used in football. It is also applicable to use in other sports where the draw is possible. This aims to cut the need for a draw. Also, to give a fair level playing field for the two opposing teams that are not evenly matched.

Besides, Asian handicap is also a variety of spread betting. Wherein, it gives a virtual advantage to the underdog. Also, for the favorites that have disproportionate strength and form. To simply put, before the kick-off, the weaker team gets an advantage (goals). Usually, the handicaps or goal advantage gets to the underdog team.

Asian handicaps are written in a decimal/fraction or whole number. For the favorite team, a minus symbol (-) is used, and it means a handicap disadvantage. Thus, a plus symbol (+) will get to the underdog team for the handicap advantage. In Asian handicap betting, you will get a lot of Asian betting odds options which are called “lines”.

Asian Handicap Explained

0.0 Asian handicap Example

In this example, let’s say: Manchester United’s odds are 1.90 VS Liverpool’s football odds are 1.95. And you are going to bet $100 on Manchester United on the 0.0 Asian Handicap.

Here, if Manchester United wins, you will win the bet. And if a draw occurs, then you get a refund. But, if Manchester United loses, then you will lose the bet.

0.25 Asian Handicap Line Example

Let’s say that the football game starts with a score of 0-0.25. Then, before the kick-off, the underdog team has a quarter-goal lead. Here, you will either, win, win the half, lose, or lose the half amount of your wager.

For example, Manchester United’s odds are 2.00 VS Liverpool’s odds at 1.90. And you are going to bet $100 on Manchester United to win the -0.25 Asian handicap.

In here, if Manchester United wins, then you win the bet. But when the result is a draw, then you will lose half of your wager and then take home the other half. Likewise, if Liverpool wins, then you lose your bet.

But when you are wagering $100 on Liverpool to win the +0.25 Asian handicap.

Here, if Liverpool wins, then you win the bet. But when the draw occurs, then you will get half of your bet back. Also, in the other half ($50) at 1.90 odds. So it is a win-win situation, you can still profit with the underdog. But if Liverpool loses the game, then you will also lose your bet.

0.5 Handicap Line Example

Let’s say the football match will start with a score with the half goal handicaps of 0:0.5. Then, the outsider team will now have the advantage of half goal before the kick-off.

For example, Real Madrid’s odds are at 1.85 VS Bournemouth’s odds at 2.00. And you are wagering $100 on Real Madrid to win a -0.5 Asian handicap. Here, when the team has the lead from the sports betting markets, then we use the “-” sign.

So, when Real Madrid wins, then you also win the bet. But, if ever Bournemouth wins or the match ends in a draw, then you will lose the bet.

Let’s say, you are wagering $100 on Real Madrid to win +0.5 Asian Handicap. With Asian handicaps in betting, you will notice that we use the “+” here. We do this if the team gets the lead from the sports betting market.

So, you will win the bet when Real Madrid wins or the match ends in a draw. But when Bournemouth wins, then you will lose your bet. This goes the same when you bet on Bournemouth to win at -0.5 Asian Handicap. In this case, they usually have the same bets and the same odds.

0.75 Asian Handicap Line Example

In this case, the match starts with a score of 0:0.75 also called a 3/4 goal handicap. This means that the underdog team gets a head start of 0.75 goals before kick-off.

For this case, this is different from the 0.25 Asian handicap betting but with a slight exception.

+0.75 AH Line

In this sample, the Manchester City’s odds are at 1.90 VS Real Madrid’s odds at 1.90. Then, you are going to place a wager of $100 on Manchester City to win a +0.75 Asian handicap. Let’s say that the home team is the underdog. This means that Manchester City will get the 0.75 goal handicap before the kick-off.

So, you will win the bet when Manchester City wins or the game ends in a draw. Likewise, when Real Madrid wins with one goal difference like 0-1, 1-2, or 2-3, then you lose half of your bet. And the other $50 will be returned to you.

But if the case is, Real Madrid wins the game with two or more goal differences like 0-2, 1-3, or 0-3, then you will lose all your bets.

And if the case are you wager $100 on Real Madrid to win the +0.75 Asian handicap, then this will happen: For you to win your bet, Real Madrid needs to win by 2 or more goals differences like 0-2, 0-3, or 1-3. And you are wagering $100 on Real Madrid to win a -0.75 Asian Handicap.

In this case, Real Madrid needs to win by 2 or more goal differences like 0-2, 0-3, and 1-3 respectively.

And if Real Madrid wins the match by 2 or more goals, then you win as well. Yet, when Real Madrid wins by one goal, then you will half the price of your bet. Plus, the other half multiply by 1.90. But if the game ends in a tie or Manchester City wins, then you lose your bet.

-1 AH Line Example

With this -1 Asian handicap in betting, the game will start with a score of 0:1. This means that the underdog team gets a head start of one goal before kick-off.

Let’s say, Manchester City has odds of 1.80 against West Ham at odds of 2.05. And, you are wagering $100 on Manchester City to win a -1 Asian handicap. Then, Manchester City needs to win by two or more goals, for you to be a winner.

To be clear, when Manchester City wins by 2 or more goals, then you win the bet. But, if Manchester City wins by 1 goal only, then you will get your wager back. And in the case that West Ham or the game ends in a tie, then you lose the bet.

Additionally, if you are wagering $100 on West Ham to win +1 Asian Handicap. Then, West Ham needs to win or tie the game for you to become a winner.

In here, if the match results in a tie or West Ham wins, you win the bet. And if West Ham loses by 1 goal, you’ll get a refund of your bet. But, if Manchester City, wins by 2 or more goals – you lose the bet.

Moreover, this case will also apply when the home team is an outsider. The Asian handicap in betting will look like this 1:0 or +1.

In this case, the underdogs have the goal advantage of 1.5 before kick-off. The difference here among other Asian handicaps is that there will be no bet back in this market.

Let’s put it this way, the West Ham odds are at 1.90 VS Liverpool odds at 2.00. And you are wagering on West Ham with $100 with a -1.5 Asian handicaps. Likewise, to be a winner, West Ham must win with 2 or more goals difference. And in other cases, you lose the bet.

Let’s suppose West Ham wins with 2 or more goals, then you win. But your profit will be $90. And if West Ham wins with 1 goal, ties the game, or Liverpool wins, then you will lose your bet.

And in the case that you bet on Liverpool with $100 at +1.5 Asian handicap. Liverpool wins or loses with a 1-goal difference, then you win the bet. Yet, you lose when West Ham wins with a 2 or more goal difference.
