How to play Roulette: Types of Roulette Bets

Before you place your bet, you need to know the type of Roulette bets – the inside bet and the outside bet.

The Inside bets

The Corner Bet (a.k.a. The Square/The Four-Number)

You can bet on a four-number by placing your chips on the intersection of four numbers meet. If the number wins, you’ll get paid 8:1.

The Beast (a.k.a. The Monster/The Five Number)

This bet is only applicable on the American Roulette wheel that has a 00. And honestly, we do not tell you to make a bet like this – it is the worst bet. You can place your chips as a line bet on the first five numbers: 0, 00, 1, 2, and 3. And if your number wins, you’ll get paid only 6:1. So it is not worth the try because the payout is so small.

The Line Bet (a.k.a. Sixline/Six Number Bet)

You can place your chips outside the border. And the chips will straddle the horizontal line between two rows. Simply put, you are wagering on two sets of 3 sequential numbers. If the number wins, the payout is 5:1 only.

Outside Bets

The outside bet is not placing your chip outside the border. But instead, it is placing your chips based on a category of numbers rather than on any specific ones. And if you haven’t got the holds of how to play Roulette, we advise that you make outside bets first.

Different Types of Outside Bets

The Black/Red Bet

This type of bet is an easy bet for a new player of Roulette. Simply because you are only wagering on either black or red. And the payout here is 1:1. And if you win, you can keep your original bet and get an equal amount of your wager.

The Column Bet

In this type of bet, you are wagering in one of the columns of numbers on the layout. And if your guess is right, you get a payout of 2:1.

The Dozens Bet

As the name suggests, you are betting that the winning number will be between 1-12, 13-24, and 25-36 number. Then, you can place your wager on the two sets of dozen but not all three. If your assumption is right, you’ll get a payout of 2:1.

The Odd/Even Bet

You are betting on either one of the 18-even numbers or one of the 18-odd numbers. So, you should not bet on either 0 or 00. And if the balls land on this number the house will win and you lose. The payout here is 1:1 like the black/red bet.

The High/Low Bet

In this type of outside bet, you are wagering on any of the 1-18 or 19-36. So, if the ball lands on either 0 or 00, the house wins. The payout here is 1:1.

Special Bets

This type of bet is only applicable to American Roulette. Here, the house gets the advantage of having a 0 and 00 on the Roulette win. So, if you are just learning how to play Roulette, all outside wagers lose when the ball lands on 0 and 00.

But, when you are playing European Roulette, you get the opportunity to win some or get all your money back when the ball lands on 0.

Different Types of Special Bets

This special bet is only offered at European Roulette. Thus, if the ball lands on 0, any of the high/low bets or black/red bets will be split into half. And half of your bet will be returned to you.

En Prison

When the ball lands on 0, you don’t automatically lose in an even-money bet. But instead, your bet will remain in play for the next spin. And if you win on the next spin, you will get your original bet. Thus, if the ball lands on 0 the second time around, then you lose.
